I did install DD-WRT on my Linksys WRT54G2 V1 to gain more
controls on this router. One of my main purpose is to set bandwith limit per
MAC or per IP to all connected device using this firmware. Just to solve my
problem on users that keeps hogging the network and downloading torrents all day
that's why I decided to install DD-WRT. Installing DD-WRT firmware on this router WRT54G2
is so easy, all you need to do is carefully follow the installation instruction. With my luck I manage to successfully install the firmware without
any problems. You may see how I manage to install DD-WRT firmware below.
Steps on How to Install DD-WRT on Linksys WRT54G2 V1
Pre-requisite:
Download
3.Tftp.exe
4.Do this on your own risk.
Now let's start!
First, reset your router to default settings.
Go to your router web interface by typing 192.168.1.1 and
key in your username and password
Go to Administration page then click on Factory Defaults.
Tick the Yes button then save, wait for a few minutes until
you redirected back to the page.
Close the router web interface then type again 192.168.1.1
on your web browser to check if it is the reset already takes effect.
Type the router default username and password (username is
empty and password is ‘admin’) and if you successfully logged that means router
is now on default settings.
Next thing to do is to configure your computer IP to static,
192.168.1.10 and 255.255.255.0 for subnet mask, just leave other fields as is.
To configure your computer IP to static, just go to Control
Panel then click on Network Connections, right click Local Area Connection then
select Properties. On General tab, scroll down the ‘This connection uses the
following items:’ the click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties.
Tick the ‘Use the following address:’ and type the given static IP above and
its mask. Click OK to save.
Once above steps are done, go to your router web interface,
click on Administration then go to Firmware Upgrade.
On firmware upgrade browse VxWorksKiller-G2V1-new.bin file
then click on ‘Upgrade’. Wait for 1 minute and let the router reboot on its
own. If it does not you may reboot it manually after a minute or two.
Next is to transfer the DD-WRT firmware using tftp, just
click on tftp.exe then type in the server which is 192.168.1.1 and the password
is ‘admin’.
On File browse the ‘dd-wrt.v24-10709_NEWD_micro.bin’ which
we downloaded earlier. Then click ‘Upgrade’, you can see status message if your
upgrade is successful.
Wait for 3-4 minutes for the router is taking time to write
the new firmware. On this process, the router will reboot on its own, just wait
and see for 3 minutes again.
After that, manually reboot your router and wait for 1
minute to power cycle it, the next step is go to your web browser and key in
192.168.1.1.
You are now ready to use DD-WRT firmware on your WRT54G2
Linksys router, just type your new desired username and password.
Voila! You are almost done, done forge to set back your
computer IP address to obtain automatically. That’s it. Work-through source.
